In the foreground is the end of the animal wall closest to the castle, which is comprised of 15 sculptures. This sculpture is of a lynx designed by William Burges and carved by Thomas Nicholls in the early 1890's and is one the original 9 animals, before a further 6 were added to the wall in 1931. Originally the wall was situated in front of Cardiff castle's entrance but was moved in the 1920's. In the background is the west side of the castle where the guest tower and castles apartments are located. The picture was taken shortly before the £5.6 million refurbishment of Bute Park and restoration of the animal wall.
